Tips for Using German Phrases in Real Life

  • Use “Sie” with strangers and officials. “Du” is for friends, flatmates, classmates and children.
  • “Bitte” and “Danke” go a long way. Germans may sound direct, but politeness words are always appreciated.
  • Ask people to slow down. “Können Sie das bitte langsamer sagen?” is a perfectly normal request.
  • Prepare before important appointments. Read the phrases for the Bürgeramt or doctor the evening before.
